The road to sustainability

Made with care and unconditionally loved by our customers.

Based on consultations with our members and stakeholders, we have identified four key development pathways that are critical to building a sustainable and future-proof asphalt value chain.

1. Quality in design and maintenance

For a sustainable and future-proof asphalt value chain, effective asset management and maintenance are of crucial importance. Clients and contractors work together to ensure optimal road quality and maximise the service life of road infrastructure. Public road authorities increasingly rely on data, sensors and digital dashboards to develop targeted and predictive maintenance strategies. At the same time, the use of sustainable materials and innovative construction techniques helps reduce environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle of the road.

2. Clean asphalt production

A transition towards cleaner and more energy-efficient asphalt production is essential for a sustainable asphalt value chain. By shifting towards electric production at lower temperatures, the sector can reduce energy consumption, peak demand and emissions of CO₂, nitrogen and substances of very high concern. This contributes to a cleaner, more resource-efficient and future-proof asphalt industry.

3. Certainty about raw materials

A circular and resource-efficient material flow is essential for a sustainable asphalt value chain. By tracking materials throughout the value chain and knowing what materials and quality are incorporated in each road, their value can be preserved and reused at the highest possible level. The use of bio-based binders and secondary or waste-based materials, combined with on-site recycling where possible, reduces the need for primary raw materials and imports while avoiding unnecessary transport, costs and emissions. This creates a more circular, resilient and resource-independent asphalt chain.

4. Smart collaboration in the supply chain

A coordinated approach to procurement and commissioning is essential for accelerating a sustainable asphalt value chain. By aligning public clients through a shared demand alliance and procurement strategy, sustainability requirements and performance standards can be applied consistently across the sector. Data and digital dashboards enable informed decision-making and coordination, while a shared view on innovation needs creates a clear and predictable market demand for sustainable solutions.
