Innovation based on the CASCADE Methodology

Enabling Collective Action for Sustainable Infrastructure

The CASCADE methodology is a science-based, multi-layered and actor-centered approach developed by Wageningen University & Research to help organizations move from fragmented initiatives towards coordinated collective action.

CASCADE addresses four systemic barriers through four interconnected layers. Each layer focuses on a specific barrier and creates the conditions needed for the next. The layers therefore do not operate as independent modules, but form a cascade in which actors, resources, capabilities and institutions become progressively aligned.

At the core is an ecosystem perspective: CASCADE identifies interdependencies, shared challenges and opportunities for collaboration, while assessing value creation across five interconnected dimensions: economic, institutional, environmental, human and social value.
